The 4 Kedars are part of the sacred Panch Kedar Yatra dedicated to Lord Shiva. These temples hold immense spiritual significance and are located in the picturesque Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Apart from Kedarnath, the other four Kedars are Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar, each representing a different part of Shiva’s divine body.

1.⁠ ⁠Madhyamaheshwar (मध्यमहेश्वर)

  • Significance: Represents Lord Shiva’s navel (nabhi).
  • Location: At an altitude of 3,497 meters (11,473 feet) in the Mansoona village of Rudraprayag district.
  • Trek Distance: 16 km from Ransi Village (the last motorable point).
  • Best Time to Visit: May to October.
  • Specialty: The temple is surrounded by mesmerizing meadows, snow-capped peaks (like Chaukhamba), and dense forests. A smaller temple dedicated to Bhima (one of the Pandavas) is also present near the main shrine.
  • Trek Difficulty: Moderate.

 

2.⁠ ⁠Tungnath (तुंगनाथ)

  • Significance: Represents Lord Shiva’s arms (bahu).
  • Location: Situated at an altitude of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet), it is the highest Shiva temple in the world.
  • Trek Distance: 4 km from Chopta (known as the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand”).
  • Best Time to Visit: May to November.
  • Specialty: Offers stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. The Chandrashila summit is a 1.5 km trek further up from Tungnath.
  • Trek Difficulty: Easy to moderate.

 

3.⁠ ⁠Rudranath (रुद्रनाथ)

  • Significance: Represents Lord Shiva’s face (mukha).
  • Location: At an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) in the Chamoli district.
  • Trek Distance: 18-20 km from Sagar Village or 20 km from Mandal Village.
  • Best Time to Visit: May to October.
  • Specialty: The temple is located amidst lush meadows and surrounded by rhododendron forests. Sacred kunds (water ponds) like Surya Kund, Chandra Kund, and Tarak Kund are located nearby.
  • Trek Difficulty: Challenging.

 

4.⁠ ⁠Kalpeshwar (कल्पेश्वर)

  • Significance: Represents Lord Shiva’s hair (jata).
  • Location: Situated at an altitude of 2,200 meters (7,217 feet) in the Urgam Valley of Chamoli district.
  • Trek Distance: 2 km from Urgam Village (accessible by a motorable road from Helang).
